Store List Features

What are the most useful features of this application. It seems to me it’s more than just a store list app. It’s a recipe app, it’s a what should we have for dinner app and it’s a what should I buy at the store app. That’s a lot of features so I’ll just brain storm:

- create a store list: from scratch, from previous lists, from “core” lists, from recipes, from meals

- enter recipes: manually, import from other sources (email, websites, books?, magazines?)

- create meals: from recipes, with random stuff thrown in (i.e. salad, bread & butter)

- organize list for store

- rate and comment on meals

Here is the project plan for the grocery list application. I’ll have a project folder? And under that a db folder? And under that the individual directories for each app front end? And what about GIT? How will that work? Just get something going and worry about all that later.

Creating/Populating Tables

Looking for an application specific way to create and populate a MySQL database. Then I’ll use this as a starting point for all of the applications that I’m planning to build.

Create table:

DROP TABLE IF EXISTS books;

CREATE TABLE books
(
    title          CHAR(50)    NOT NULL,
    author         CHAR(30)    NOT NULL,
    publisher      CHAR(30),
    topic          CHAR(20),
    comment        CHAR(100),
    price          FLOAT
);

then either mysql  source filename if you are already in mysql

Installing MySql

Installed mysql using this link from Hive Logic.

The only thing I changed was the last step where he says to run

sudo ./bin/mysql_install_db --user=mysql
but I used
sudo ./bin/mysql_install_db --user=root
instead because it wasn't letting me login when I did it as mysql.
I looked into all of the users on my mac and I had a _mysql user but not
a mysql user.  So I figured maybe that was the issue.

Git Install

Just installed Git from source into /usr/local/git.

Grabbed git-1.6.6.1.tar.gz from the main git site and copied it to /usr/local/src.

then I unzipped it and cd to the git directory and ran the following:

autoreconf

./configure –prefix=/usr/local/git

make prefix=/usr/local

make install prefix=/usr/local

Ruby Strings

Learning Ruby from the ground up:

double quotes allows Ruby to do replacements \n becomes new line #{name} gets replaced with the variable name.

single quotes don’t do replacements so \n stays \n and #{name} stays #{name}

Git Research

Installing Ruby From Source

This is a post of notes I’m taking while following the HiveLogic instructions for installing Ruby, Rails, MySQL etc… from source.

curl: a GNU tool for doing FTP, HTTP etc… The -O option means it creates a file named like whatever file we are pulling down

There was also an interesting HiveLogic article on using /usr/local because this is safe from upgrades. So now I’ll always have the latest ruby that can’t be touched by system upgrades.

This is pretty straight forward with the exception of knowing which arguments to pass to the configure command. Otherwise it’s just:

download the source

unzip/untar

run ./configure with “magic params”

run make

run make install
